Sharif Sheikh Ahmed Defies Government Restrictions on Planned Opposition Protests

Mogadishu, Somalia — Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has vowed that opposition-led demonstrations will proceed throughout Mogadishu despite government attempts to limit the protests to a single location.
Addressing a gathering of opposition politicians on Tuesday, Sharif argued that peaceful assembly is a constitutional right and cannot be confined to one venue by government decree. He called on citizens from across the capital to participate in the planned demonstrations.
“The whole city should come out,” Sharif declared, rejecting the government’s directive that all protests be held exclusively at Eng. Yarisow Stadium.
The federal government has defended the restriction, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order. However, opposition leaders contend that the measure is politically motivated and designed to suppress public dissent.
Sharif noted that organizers had already informed authorities of their intention to hold peaceful demonstrations and questioned the legal basis for limiting where citizens may gather to express their views.
He also urged young Somalis not to be discouraged by the possibility of arrest or intimidation, emphasizing that democratic freedoms must be actively protected by the public.
In his remarks, Sharif accused the administration of targeting critics through arrests and harassment, claiming that citizens have witnessed increasing pressure on individuals who express opposition to government policies.
The dispute highlights growing political tensions in Somalia as opposition groups push for greater political openness and accountability. Despite the government’s position, opposition leaders say they remain determined to move forward with their plans, insisting that the right to peaceful protest is guaranteed under the constitution.
As preparations continue, attention is now focused on whether authorities and opposition groups can avoid confrontation and ensure that any demonstrations remain peaceful.
